2016 President of the Armenian Association of Hematology and Oncology

Avo Artinyan

It is our pleasure to announce the newly elected 2016 President of the Armenian Association of Hematology and Oncology Dr. Avo Artinyan (Houston, TX, USA).

Dr Artinyan is an Associate Professor and the Chief of the Colorectal Surgery Section at the Department of Surgery of Baylor College of Medicine. Upon joining Baylor College of Medicine, he founded the robotic colorectal cancer surgery program at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. In 2010, he was among the early developers and adopters of transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS), a technique that has since transformed the field of rectal cancer surgery.

Dr. Artinyan also directs the Baylor College of Medicine Simulation Center, whose mission is to foster innovation and teach innovative surgical technique to students and residents in a simulated environment.

After earning his medical degree from the UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Artinyan completed his Master of Science degree, general surgery residency, and colorectal cancer research fellowship at the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles. He then completed a 3 year clinical and research fellowship at the City of Hope Cancer Center in Duarte, CA focusing on minimally invasive and robotic gastrointestinal surgical oncology and colorectal cancer surgery.

He is the author of numerous publications, technical videos, and book chapters. He is a recipient of a BCM Educator Award, Super Teacher Award, and a Fulbright and Jaworski LLP Faculty Excellence Award.

In addition to advancing the field of surgery, Dr. Artinyan’s primary goal is to provide the most compassionate and innovative care for his patients.

Dr. Artinyan’s clinical and research expertise is in the area of minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgical oncology, particularly laparoscopic, robotic and transanal colon and rectal cancer surgery. He has a special interest in sphincter-preserving techniques for rectal cancer resection aimed at reducing the need for permanent colostomy and improving quality of life.

It is a great honor and pleasure for us to have Dr. Artinyan as a newly elected 2016 President of the Association.
